The Preventive Program

Both natural teeth and teeth with restorations survive best in an oral environment that is clean and where the intake of sugary foods is controlled. The cavity causing bacteria loves sugar. Sugar causes cavities. Period.
Some of the worst damage to teeth we see is from sugary drinks, this includes the obvious sodas but also the sports drinks. Drinking liquid sugar bathes the teeth, therefore the sugar gets everywhere. For your information, one 12 oz soda contains 11 teaspoons of sugar. Yes, you read that right.
Our program is designed to help prevent new cavities, preserve teeth that have been restored and manage periodontal disease. At the initial visit, oral hygiene instructions are reviewed and reinforced at subsequent visits. The following are helpful recommendations:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day in a circular motion with a soft bristled toothbrush aimed at the gum. All patients get a new soft toothbrush at every visit. (And floss)
  • Floss every night in an up and down motion while keeping the floss in a U-shape and against the tooth surface. If flossing with 'string' is extremely difficult, try the new floss sticks.
  • Floss - even with braces. No excuses - new floss sticks available just for braces.
  • Avoid smoking. Smoking causes cavities through the nicotinic acid. The acid breaks down tooth enamel.
  • Avoid sticky sugary foods.
  • Avoid sugary drinks.
  • Eat a balanced diet. A balanced diet includes hard foods like apples, celery and nuts. These harder foods help to keep the teeth clean.
  • Have sealants placed properly on young permanent teeth.
Click here for info on sealants and proper application.

If you have been diagnosed with 'rampant decay', which means lots and lots of cavities, we have a special program for you. Click here for more information.
